Woven by the Fire: When Clothing Becomes Part of the Movement — Vol. 2

Posted by Anna-Rose Rombouts on

In Vol. 1, we explored how Wild Fibres grew from our love of festival fashion and our connection with the flow-art community. What began with friends asking us to create clothing for their performances gradually became something much bigger — a creative exchange between fashion, movement, music and self-expression.

Our relationship with the flow community has continued to grow, and along the way we've connected with people and businesses who share that same love for movement, creativity and festival culture.

One of those connections is UltraPoi

Where Festival Fashion Meets Flow

Flow art is about movement.

Poi, hoops, staffs, fans and other props become extensions of the body, creating patterns through rhythm, rotation and dance. Whether performed with fire during the night or illuminated with LED light, flow arts create a unique combination of movement and visual expression.

And this is where we see such a natural connection with clothing.

At Wild Fibres, we've always believed that festival clothing should allow people to move freely. We love flowing silhouettes, expressive prints, natural fabrics and garments that come alive when the wearer moves.

When someone is dancing, spinning or flowing, the clothing becomes part of the movement too.

A wide-leg pant can sweep through a turn.

A flowing skirt can catch the air.

A loose sleeve can follow the movement of an arm.

The garment becomes another element of the visual experience.

Our Connection With UltraPoi

UltraPoi is a cornerstone of the wider flow-art world, specializing in professional-grade LED and fire flow props designed for people who want to explore movement, light, and performance art. From their iconic, impact-resistant LED Poi Sets, they engineer gear that can withstand intense practice sessions while delivering brilliant, customizable light shows. They’ve even revolutionized LED hula hooping with rechargeable, customizable hoops, allowing performers to upgrade their visual flow with advanced color-changing tech.

Designing Clothing That Moves

Being around flow artists has influenced the way we think about clothing.

A garment can look beautiful on a hanger, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will work when someone is dancing or performing.

We think about how fabrics move around the body, how garments feel during extended movement and whether a design allows the wearer to move naturally.

This is particularly important with flowing festival clothing.

We want our pieces to have their own movement without getting in the way of the person wearing them.

That's why so many of our designs feature flowing shapes, generous silhouettes and fabrics that move naturally with the body.

The goal isn't to restrict movement.

It's to enhance it.

Fire, Light and Natural Fibres

The connection becomes even more interesting when fire enters the picture.

Many brightly coloured festival garments are made from synthetic fibres. While these materials can create vibrant colours and interesting finishes, many synthetic fabrics can melt, shrink or drip when exposed to high heat or flame.

Our preference for natural fibres comes from our wider philosophy around clothing, materials and conscious production, but it also has particular relevance within the fire-flow community.

Natural fibres don't behave in exactly the same way as synthetic materials when exposed to flame, which is why material choice is an important consideration for performers.

Of course, no clothing should be considered completely fireproof, and appropriate fire-safety practices and performance equipment are essential whenever working with fire.

For us, it's about creating clothing that fits naturally within a community that takes movement, expression and fire seriously.

More Than What You Wear

One of the things we've come to understand through our relationship with the flow community is that clothing can be more than something you put on before going to a festival.

It can become part of your identity.

Part of your movement.

Part of your performance.

And sometimes simply part of the feeling of being free.

This is why we love seeing Wild Fibres pieces being worn by dancers and flow artists.

We get to see the clothing doing what we designed it to do — moving, flowing and becoming part of someone's expression.

A Shared Festival Culture

Wild Fibres and UltraPoi exist within a much bigger culture of creativity.

Festivals bring together musicians, dancers, flow artists, designers, performers, makers and audiences who all contribute something different.

A pair of LED poi can create a trail of colour through the night.

Fire props can transform movement into something mesmerising.

And clothing can move alongside it all, adding texture, shape and another layer of expression.

That's what makes the festival environment so inspiring to us.

There are no strict boundaries between fashion, performance, art and movement.

They naturally overlap.

And that's exactly where Wild Fibres feels at home.

Our journey into flow art continues to evolve, shaped by the people we meet, the artists we work with and the communities that continue to inspire us.

Inspired by nature. Made for movement.

From festival fashion to flow art, we're proud to keep creating clothing for people who want to move through the world in their own unique way.
